My Brother
Posted: September 9, 2012 | Last Revised: September 9, 2012
For the last 31 years, I have had the best big brother in the world. He has been there with me through every moment of my life, big and little. Whether it was playing Barbie's with me when I was little, or taking me along when he went on dates as a teenager, Jimmie always had time for me. By the time I was in high school Jimmie had his own place, but he was still there for every heart break, to help me with my school work, and to pick me up from parties when I didn't want to call our parents.
When I first met my husband and he called to ask me on our first date, I saved his message on my parent's answering machine for 2 days until Jimmie could come over and listen to it. After I played the message for him, Jimmie said "Yep, you should call him. He sounds like a cool dude." So I did. On Ryan and I's first date I took him to meet Jimmie and they have been great friends ever since. Jimmie was Ryan's best man at our wedding; he was at the hospital anxiously waiting when both of our children were born. He was always there.
When I was 17 and got into a car accident, I called Jimmie. When I ripped my pants at work and didn't know what to do, I called Jimmie. When I needed someone to pick my son up from school, I called Jimmie. When I needed advice about who to pick for my fantasy football team, I called Jimmie. When I needed a recommendation for a good movie or book, I called Jimmie. When I was upset and needed to talk, I called Jimmie. When the doctors said that something was wrong with my baby and I needed to go in for an emergency ultrasound, I called Jimmie and he held my hand until Ryan could get there. It didn't matter what was going on, good or bad, I called my brother.
Jimmie was the first person I talked to every morning and that was just the beginning of the dozen or so times we would talk throughout the day. He was so much more than my brother - he was my mentor, my confidant, my friend. To say that I will miss him is inadequate. There are no words for what he meant to me and no words to describe how my heart breaks now that he is gone.

Remembering the Broggers and the Flacks - August 11, 2012
Posted: August 11, 2012 | Last Revised: August 11, 2012
Some of the best times I can remember of Jimmie were when our families would hang out together. Amber and I were pregnant together twice, their son Baylie is the same age as our daughter Alexus and their son Kolin is the same age as our daughter Kennedy. I remember entertaining ourselves with pool playing, music, and plenty of laughter! Jimmie had such a contagious laugh!
I first met Jimmie and Amber early on in their marriage through my husband Michael who was Jimmies best friend since about 10 years old. I have always told Michael that it was so weird to me that they never argued or even disagree with each other. Michael could have an insanely stupid idea and Jimmie would just laugh and say "cool, let's do it!" They always supported each other, just like Jimmie was such a great support for Amber and the kids.
When we moved to Virginia 5 years ago Michael and Jimmie stayed in touch and talked ( literally ) almost EVERY day. Jimmie would always brag on his kids, telling us funny stories the little ones did or stories about the bigger kids and their activities, always showing his pride in being their father. Jimmie was definatley that, a great father. Jimmie and Amber always used to tell us they wanted 10 kids because they just loved kids so much.
Jimmie would also update us on Ambers progress with all of the trials she has faced and we would pray for her recovery. You could always tell by the way he worried and talked about her that even after 15 years of marriage he was madly in love with her.
I can't wait to see the kids grow up and pass on their dads legacy as they will probably be great fathers one day too. Jimmie was there for so many of the milestones in our lives and marriage, our wedding, birthdays etc. that it will be hard not having him there. His presence will always be in our memories of him and I hope that he will watch us from Heaven, laughing at us and cheering us on. Rest in piece Jimmie knowing you have made your mark here on earth....

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave bereft
I am not there. I have not left.

My Uncle Jimmie and I were never super close, and for a long time when I was younger I had the impression that all he cared about were sports. But as I've grown older I have seen that I couldn't be more wrong. My uncle cared fiercely for his family. He was the best father his children could ask for and was an amazing husband to my aunt. He was such an amazing part of my life and I wish I had realized much earlier. I wish I could tell him how much I admire his spirit and his caring heart. I know that he is in a better place now, that I will see him again, and that he knows how much I truly love him, but I wish I had said all of that to him before. I love you, Uncle Jimmie, and I promise to do everything I can to care for our family just as much as you did and to live each day with the same fierce love and heart that you did.
