Virgil Peterson

 

Virgil Peterson passed away July 27, 2019 after a short illness. Virgil was born September 15, 1927 in Ford County, Kansas, near Dodge City, to Sigvald and Vilda Peterson as a first generation American. Sigvald had immigrated to America as a four-year-old child from Denmark. Virgil spent time in the United States Army before starting a career over time in farming and truck driving. He worked delivering freight and driving semi-truck routes for Safeway Food Stores, Montgomery Wards, and Roadway, retiring after a long union career. During his life, he also farmed in various locations in Colorado and loved to be connected to the land and farming. Where he continued up until his passing.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents Sigvald and Vilda, sisters Marjorie and Alice. Virgil is survived by his, brothers Arlo and Galen, his son Billy and Billy’s wife Sharon, and two granddaughters Maria Atha and Tiffany Peterson, as well as two grandsons by Mariah and Brandon, Elijah James and Cooper William Atha. Virgil raised three surviving step-sons, Steve, Phillip, and Mike Scarlett from the marriage with Sue, Billy’s mother.

On September 15, 1979 Virgil married Helen Lattie in Cheyenne Wells Colorado. A Marriage that would last almost 40 years.  Virgil farmed and continued driving truck for Montgomery Wards, while Helen worked at St. Joseph Hospital of the Plains. Virgil loved to farm.  Later they found property in Watkins Colorado. While waiting on their new home to be built, they lived in Byers until moving into their new home in Watkins, April of 1986.  This would be where Virgil and Helen would live until present day.

Helen has one daughter, Karen, her husband Carleton of Cheyenne Wells and one son Michael, his wife Shawnda their son, Justin and daughter Shannon of Arvada, CO.

Though life was not always easy, Helen will greatly miss Virgil.
