Charles Frank Crosby, the first born of Frank L. Crosby and Mary A. (Fincher) Crosby, was born on April 3rd, 1915 in Gray County, Kansas.
As a small child, his parents left Kansas to try and find a place where they hoped to settle down in. In 1925, they ended up in Limon, Colorado. Charlesâ schooling was in a little country school, where he rode a horse to attend. Charles only attended school until the 6th grade. He started working and helping neighbors at the age of 11. He was an ambitious worker and loved farming.
In 1933, he came to the Karval area to work for a small wage. His father passed away in May of 1936, so he had to return southwest of Limon to help his mother with the work there.
While in Karval, he became acquainted with Fern Dockendorf. They were married on September 6th, 1936 in Fowler, Colorado. Four children were born to this union. They lived southwest of Limon the first year they were married, then moved back to Karval where Charles worked long hours for different farmers in the area.
When World War II broke out, he was working for a rancher east of Karval that helped to keep him out of the service so that he could do his farming for him.
They remained on this farm six years before buying a farm in 1947, where they lived for 56 years. Charles was a hard worker and was good to help his neighbors whenever they needed help, until his health started to fail him. In 1998, he retired from farming at the age of 83. Charles and Fern lived on this farm until the year 2003, and then they sold it and moved back to Limon. Charlesâ hobbies were working in his shop, making rope, power hacksaws, windmills for yard decorations and a powered can smasher.
After his wife passed away in April of 2005, most of his remaining life was spent with his daughter, Betty, in Limon, until they moved to Sun City, Arizona in June of 2007. Charles passed away at that home, very unexpectedly and very peacefully on Friday, February 8th, 2008 at 11:00 p.m.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Albert and Robert and two sisters, Myrtle and Helen.
He is survived by his four children, Elden (Carol) Crosby of Phoenix, Arizona, Ron (Donna) Crosby of Broomfield, Colorado, Betty Higginson of Sun City, Arizona and Peggy Mattson of Denver, Colorado. Charles also has four grandsons; five granddaughters; and 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.
A funeral service for Charles will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008 11:00 A.M. at the Karval School Gymnasium in Karval, Colorado. He will be laid to rest by his wife, Fern, in the Karval Community Cemetery. Memorials may be made to donorâs choice.
