Obituary of William Willoughby

William “Bill” Willoughby of Flagler, Co passed away on October 31, 2009 in Denver, CO at the age of 77. Bill was born on November 15, 1931 in Dayton, OH TO William Everett and Stella (Stephens) Willoughby, one of ten children. He grew up in the Hillsboro area where his family farmed. They then moved to Ocala, FL when he was teenager. There he graduated from Ocala High School. He then went on to join the Air Force Reserves and start his college education. After 2 years, Bill put college on hold and joined the Air Force full time. While stationed in California in the late fifties, he met and married his wife of 26 years, Dolores Sharkey. During his service, Bill and Dee had 3 wonderful children as they enjoyed being stationed in various cities and meeting new friends. He retired as a Tech Sgt. after 22 years of service in 1972. After retirement he went on to complete his degree in engineering at Adams State College in Massachusetts. Some of Bill’s most distinguished lifetime achievements were working on, the Polaris Missile for General Electric, the Titan Missile for Martin Marietta Aerospace; and the MMU (Man Maneuvering Unit) for the Space Shuttle. Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing, reading Westerns and working crossword puzzles. He really loved living in a small community where he enjoyed supporting school activities and athletic events. He was the president of the Flagler Lyons Club and loved playing cards. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings. He is survived by one brother, June Roy, and wife, Scooter Willoughby of Madison, FL; his three children, Ten Willoughby of Flagler, CO, Tom Willoughby of Anchorage, AK, and Tina and her husband, Ross Conrad of Flagler, CO and four grandchildren, Nick Bailey and fiancé Lisa Dawson of Denver, CO, Callie, Ty, and Phillip Conrad of Flagler, CO; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
