Obituary of Edith Rains
Edith Komma Rains was born on a homestead in northern Weld County in 1919, the 5th of 14 children to Frank and Hazel (Cline) Komma. Her father was a farmer and a blacksmith and times were hard back in those days. She started first grade in a little one-room country school, and walked 1-1/4 miles with her brothers and sisters. The only exception was bad days and their father would take them to school in their Model T. These were the horse and buggy days, and when a little later the school house was moved father away, she, with her siblings, drove a horse and buggy to school. When she was 9, the family moved to a farm near Nunn, CO and they entered the Nunn school. After graduating from high school, she worked out, doing housework and later in restaurants, doing both cooking and waitress work.
She started her married life in 1942 soon after World War II began, and lived on a farm in Colorado. Later she lived with her family on ranches in Colorado and Wyoming. In 1954, she and her 3 children and husband moved to a ranch near Hugo. A few years later they added a 4th child and after some years of living on ranches she moved with her family into Hugo.
She worked as a certified nurses assistant about 20 years in the Hugo Hospital and Nursing Home. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, The United Methodist Women, Susanna Circle of UMC, member of Ladies Auxiliary to VFW, member of RSVP and AARP, a 4-H club leader for many years in cooking and leathercraft, was a member of Lincoln Community Hospital Auxiliary,
serving as memorial chairman, secretary of senior citizens council. Her hobbies were crafts, sewing, reading, tending to flowers and volunteering to help others. She was a very loving, caring and thoughtful person, and cared deeply for her family.
