Lois McMahan

Obituary of Lois McMahan

Lois Ethel Teel was born in Menlo, KS on July 27, 1940 to Herbert H and Louie Ethel (Turner) Teel in her grandparents’ farm house. She was the first of four children which included Jim, John and Anne. Lois spent her childhood growing up on the family farm north of Rexford, KS. She helped her parents on the farm with chores, taking care of her brothers and sister, and numerous activities. Lois attended school in Rexford and graduated in 1958. She went on to attend Art at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS for one year. On July 18, 1959 she married Robert Leon Meyers in Rexford. While Bob was in the Air Force, they lived in Salina, KS and on April 11, 1961 Christopher Elvaro was born. Later on they were stationed in Izmir, Turkey where on September 20, 1965 Terisa Ann was born. After being in England for four years they moved back to Burlington, January 1973. Later that year Lois and Bob were divorced. In June 1974 Lois enlisted into the Army National Guard until she was honorably discharged in June 1978. Lois worked at numerous jobs in Burlington until she retired May 27, 2010 from CCA. She had worked at the Hoof n Horn, Interstate House, Western Motor Inn, Grace Manor Nursing Home, Econolodge, and CCA. In 1977 Lois met Melvin L McMahan in Burlington and were later married. Lois and Mel had taken in her mother-in-law Lillian to take care of her when she could no longer care for herself. Later she would do the same for her mother Ethel when Herbert passed away. Lois enjoyed getting out and selling Avon for 25 years, attending T.O.P.S (weight loss group) and painting anything that didn’t move for those that knew her well when she would take a weekend and have four things painted for the county fair that all won ribbons with one getting grand champion. She loved her visits from her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and watching them grow. She loved her animals and enjoyed talking and visiting with her very close friends and those she worked with in the Medical Department at CCA. She will be sadly missed as well as her wonderful humor, contagious laughter, and beautiful smile. Lois was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer on September 19, 2008. She passed away Friday morning June 18, 2010, at St. Joseph Hospital ICU in Denver, CO after a great battle. Preceding her in death are her parents, Herbert H and Louie Ethel Teel, her brother John J. Teel and sister Anne Marie Teel Zalewski. She leaves to mourn her husband Melvin L McMahan, her children Chris (Susan) Meyers of Olathe, KS Terisa (Delmar) Carter of Lyons, KS and brother Jim (Virginia) Teel of Hutchinson, KS, very close and special friends Betty and Doug Chandler of Burlington, Donna and Don Newberry of Burlington, Debbie Carson of Burlington, Lanny Spurlock of Athol, ID, and her co-workers at CCA in the Medical Department. She is also survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends and neighbors.
