Obituary of Hugh Scherrer

Hugh Gerald Scherrer, of Matheson Colorado passed away on July 28, 2010 at the Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado with his family present. Hugh was born in Denver, Colorado on August 31, 1926 to Harry A. and Lucille (Dillon) Scherrer, one of eight children. He grew up on the family homestead northwest of Limon, and graduated from Limon High School in 1943. Hugh served his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict. After returning home he met and married the love of his life Margaret Farley on February 10, 1954 in Limon, Colorado. Hugh and Margaret were blessed with five children. Hugh absolutely loved the aroma of the prairie and enjoyed the season of harvest and his livestock. He began farming in the 1940’s, living the past 49 years at the present farm location southeast of Matheson, Colorado. Hugh was passionate about following his children and grandchildren’s music and sporting activities. He was very proud of their accomplishments and rarely missed their events. He had a great love of music, was an avid reader and never stopped learning. Hugh was very resourceful and innovative in the tasks of farm equipment repairs and the numerous challenges of a day on the farm. He was very active in the school system serving 12 years on the Simla School Board, four of those as President. He was a Director on the Prairie Development Corporation Board, hosted Elbert County political Caucus meetings in their home and served on the Board of Directors for the Kiowa Medical Clinic. Hugh played an active role in the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, serving 30 years as Financial Secretary for the Mother Cabrini Council #3247 and was instrumental in building the Limon Catholic Hall. Hugh was preceded in death by his daughter; Mary Terese, parents; Harry A. and Lucille Scherrer, two brothers; Elmer and Donald Scherrer and three sisters; Louise Claypoole, Irma Williamson and Margaret Mohatt. Hugh is survived by his wife Margaret Scherrer of Matheson, Colorado, and their children; Jinnohn Gilmore of Centennial, Colorado, Diane and her husband Stan Kimble of Limon, Colorado, Greg and his wife DeAnn Scherrer of Limon, Colorado and Dean Scherrer of Aurora, Colorado. He is survived by his brother Harry Scherrer of Limon, Colorado and his sister Mary (Leonard) Calkum of Limon, Colorado. Also surviving Hugh are his grandchildren; Ashley (Chad) Malcom and their daughter Braelyn of Limon, Colorado, Shayley (John) Garcia of Johnstown, Colorado, Zachary and Bradey Scherrer of Limon, Colorado, Tim and Tyler Kimble of Limon, Colorado, Joshua Scherrer of Aurora, Colorado and numerous nieces and nephews.
