Obituary of Betty Walker

Eda Elizabeth “Betty” Walker of Limon, Colorado passed away on July 31, 2010 in Denver, Colorado. Betty was born on August 19, 1923 in Seattle, Washington, one of five children born to John and Margaret (Smyth) Newland. She grew up in Seattle, graduating from Franklin High School in 1940. Betty met Dale Walker at a baseball game in Seattle, Washington, and the couple started dating. They married in Seattle on August 30, 1945. The couple’s first son, Dale A. Walker, better known as JR, was born in Detroit, Michigan. A few years later the family moved to Flagler, Colorado, where their second son, John, was born. At that time Dale was a partner in Stop & Shop Supermarket in Flagler, Colorado. The family lived in Flagler from 1948 thru 1966, and then moved to Limon where they owned the local grocery store. Betty was very active in the church, a long standing member of the library board and had belonged to a bowling league. She was a charter member of the Limon-Woodland Music Club and sang this past Christmas in the Vespers program and Community Choir. Betty belonged to a bridge club, the Birthday Breakfast Club, and loved to paint until her arthritis would not allow. While living in Flagler, Betty belonged to the Flagler Country Club and Ladies Club. She always said they called it the Country Club because they all lived in the country. She also enjoyed golfing. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dale, and one sister, Doris Dobson. She is survived by her sons; JR (Dawn) Walker of Limon, Colorado and John (Cheri) Walker of Limon, Colorado, her grandchildren; Fritz (Susan) Doke, Randy Doke, Kristine Stumm, Davis Walker, Loredana Walker, Mia Walker, and Sam Walker, her great-grandchildren, Jared Doke, Josh Doke, Danika Stumm and Natali Stumm. Betty is also survived by her siblings; John (Gloria) Newland, Vicki Vanderstadt and Ernest Newland.
