CPL Floyd Edward Hooper, POW/ MIA, 27, of Stratton, CO, died 30 June 1951 during military service in Korea during the Korean conflict.
CPL Floyd E. Hooper was born in Stratton, CO, 19 February 1924 of Walter and Lula Hooper. He was survived at the time of his death by his mother Lula, 3 brothers and nieces and nephews. He is currently survived by nieces and nephews. Cpl Hooper attended Anderson University in Indiana. CPL Hooper joined the Army 19 November 1948.
CPL HOOPER went Missing in Action on 4 February 1951 during a battle between the 24ID and
Chinese Communist Forces during the Korean conflict. Then PFC HOOPER served with I Company, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division at the time of the incident. Witness statements provided by repatriated Prisoners of War disclosed that Cpl Hooper died in one of the Suan transitional POW camps during the summer of 1951; CPL HOOPERs official date of death was established as 30 June 1951. On 28 May 1992 the communist government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea unilaterally turned over 15 boxes containing remains thought to be U.S. servicemen. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea reported recovering human remains near Namjon-Gu in the general area where many of the Suan transitional POW camps were located during the time of CPL HOOPERs incarceration and death. Based on DNA testing and skeletal analysis, the CIL scientific staff associated remains as CPL Floyd Hooper. Historical accounts place CPL Floyd Hooper in the general area of Namjon-Gu on 30 June 1951 .
CPL Hooper was posthumous promoted to Corporal 01 May 1953 and awarded the following Military Awards: Purple Heart, Prisoner of War Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea-Korean War Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
