Obituary of Samuel Callaway

Samuel Gwinn Callaway departed this drought stricken land for greener pastures on March 14, 2011. He was born in Cuero, Texas on November 19, 1920. His father Samuel Callaway was a dirt and dairy farmer. Sam’s mother, Addie Brumfield, a former school teacher, faithfully taught Sam and brother Brantley, sisters Maurine and Doris the value of education, hard work, honest dealings, charity to the less fortunate and solid Christianity. Sam is survived by sister Maurine of Magnolia, Texas. Sam left Texas for the Army Air Corp in WW2, was stationed in Colorado to teach cold weather survival. He met, fell in love with and married Marian Johnson on March 14, 1944. They joyfully raised daughter, Gloria Gwen Callaway Johnson. Gloria is married to Alexander Johnson, they gave Sam 3 grandchildren, Kevin Samuel, Benjamin Duncan married to Jinah, and Laura Margaret Johnson. Gloria and Sandy are currently missionaries in Peru. Marian passed away on September 9, 1976. Sam started work at AAA Colorado as a mail room stock boy after the war and retired in 1980 as the CEO of the company. Following Sam’s marriage to Rebecca in 1977, the family was able to fulfill Sam’s dream of a cattle ranch when they purchased the Kutch property in 1979. Son William Anthony passed away on February 3, 2008. Daughter Catherine Rose Marie and grandson Andrew Micah continue to reside on and operate the family ranch south of Matheson. Sam loved the prairie and greatly enjoyed seeing the mother cows fat with scampering calves. He worked very hard to take care of his cattle and found glory in riding a good horse. His love and encouragement of his children and grandchildren to do their best in whatever they chose to pursue was his greatest gift. He faithfully took Andy to sports practices and school activities. He lived each minute of every day with his dedication to what he saw as his life’s foundation of taking care of his family. Becki, Gloria, Sandy, Ben, Kevin and Laura, Cate and Andy will miss simply sitting and talking with Sam. His knowledge of a wide range of subjects and ability to simply listen and give gentle suggestions was his greatest gift. Sam enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone he came across and always gave respect to all. In addition to being a WW2 veteran, a businessman and a rancher, Sam was a rock of stability to his entire family. Ye are dust man and to dust ye shall return. But the ripples of our contributions have the power to go on forever.
