The family farmed in the Plains, Satanta and Garden City, Kansas area until moving to Byers, Kansas to farm for Mertie’s father in 1937. Marjorie and her two older brothers, Wendell Wayne and Donald Dean attended a small country school near their home and were later bussed to the Byers public school until 1945, when the family moved back to Garden City, Kansas, where Marjorie attended Junior High School. In 1947 the Sailer’s purchased farm property north of Burlington, Colorado and in the summer of 1948 the family moved to the Burlington area. Marjorie attended Burlington High School, graduating with the class of 1951. Following graduation she was employed as Chief Operator at the local telephone company. Marjorie married Dean Stewart on May 16, 1953. In January and February of 1954, with the help of family and friends Dean and Marjorie built their home and farmed with Dean’s parents Hurley and Hattie Stewart, north of Burlington. Their daughter Mardean was born in October, 1954. They welcomed two children into their home in 1961 by adopting Robert (Bob), age 4, and Penny, age 3. Their daughter Robin was born in December, 1963. Marjorie and Dean enjoyed farming together until Dean’s death in November, 1987. Marjorie remained on the farm until 2006 at which time she moved to her home in Burlington. Marjorie was a warm, caring and generous person with a positive outlook and could find good in everyone and everything.
