Obituary of Maureen Winkelman

Maureen (Templeman) Winkelman age 94 of Limon, Colorado peacefully passed away on Friday, April 13, 2012 at Carla’s Cluster Care in Limon. She was born January 27, 1918 on her grandfather Harmon Shinogle’s farm near Minneola, Kansas the daughter of Wesley Fielden and Leona DeVoe (Shinogle) Templeman. She grew up in Minneola and graduated from Minneola High School. On December 26, 1936, Maureen was united in marriage to Claude William Winkelman in Coldwater, Kansas. To this union they shared three children, Larry Gene, Joyce Alene and Steve Kent. They share over 58 years of marriage before Claude passed away two days after his 80th birthday on July 15, 1995. Maureen was a farmer’s wife for most of her life and raised her family as part of the local community since 1946. She did everything a farm wife does from cooking, cleaning, sewing, crocheting and going out to drive a tractor in the fields. She would take food out to the fields during harvest and was always making sure meals were prepared. She also raised and dressed chickens herself so that the family would have fried chicken all winter. Maureen and Claude spent their first years of marriage living and working on the Winkelman family farm outside of Bloom, Kansas. They moved to the Limon area after her parents moved here first and because the land was more affordable and the climate was much nicer. The land was much more desirable than Kansas and a lot of people moved from Minneola to Limon with the help and encouragement from Maureen’s parents. Maureen and Cluade bought land and built their farmhouse just north of Limon in 1946 which was located where Interstate 70 is today. They sold their farm in 1958 due to the construction of I-70 and purchased a farm south of Limon where they continued to grow wheat and raise cattle. In 1980, Maureen and Claude retired from farming and decided to do some traveling together all over the country. They much enjoyed their trips to Germany, France, and Australia. The farm today is currently owned and operated jointly by their two sons, Steve and Larry. Maureen loved her community of Limon and especially her Carla’s Cluster Care family which she loved so much. Most of all, she loved taking care and being a wonderful and devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family. She will be deeply missed and her warm spirit and her hard work ethic will continue on in all of their daily lives forever… She is survived by her two sons, Steve K. Winkelman (Kathy) of Limon, Colorado and Larry G. Winkelman (Donna) of Ramah, Colorado; one sister-in-law, Nina Templeman of Limon, Colorado; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one great grandchild is expected soon. Maureen is preceded in death by her husband Claude; her daughter, Joyce Alene Johnson; and her brother, Ted Templeman.
