Obituary of Joan Hornung

Joan Theresa Hornung, 88 passed away Thursday, April 21, 2016, at the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital in Burlington, Colorado. She was born August 9, 1927, to August E. and Minnie (Beat) Conrardy of Wright, Kansas. Joan attended St. Andrew’s School in Wright Kansas, until the 8th grade and then attended St. Mary’s of the Plains Academy in Dodge City, Kansas. For one year she was in the Nursing Program at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Dodge City. Joan married William Paul Hornung on November 12, 1946, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Wright, Kansas. Bill was 23 and Joan was 19. The day after they were married they moved to Stratton, Colorado. When they arrived in Stratton, there was three feet of snow on the ground. Joan and Bill have twelve children, sixty grandchildren and fifty-three great grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Bill of 69 years, and her children: Terrence (Shelley) Hornung, Victoria (Richard) Sutton, Cynthia (Kent) Luebbers, David ( Barb) Hornung, daughter-in-law Margaret Hornung Jolly, Arlene (Dave) Brinkhoff, Janine (Jim) Fox, Annette (Lee) Short, William Jr. (Jeanine) Hornung, Timothy (Darla) Hornung and Mark (Kerstin) Hornung. She is preceded in death by two sons; Stephen and Patrick, granddaughter Madeleine Hornung and great grandson James Patrick Dour. Joan was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her time was spent raising children, cooking excellent meals, and caring for her home and family. She was the bond that held this family together. At the time of her death she was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Burlington. She was devoted to her Catholic Faith and the Blessed Virgin Mary. She cooked many meals for visiting priests and spent numerous hours in taking care of the church. She encouraged her family to follow the Catholic Faith by her good example.
