Obituary of Ophelia Greer
Ophelia Raines Greer, age 97, of Greeley, Colorado passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014 in Greeley, Colorado.
Ophelia was born on February 25, 1916 in Langdon, Kansas the youngest of ten children, 7 girls and 3 boys, born to Joel and Mary Etta (Reames) Raines. Ophelias mother passed away when she was a sophomore in High School so Ophelia went to live with Aunt Belle and Uncle Joe Burchfield. She graduated from the Dandridge High School in the spring of 1936. Ophelia moved to Knoxville and enrolled at Draughans Business College for a secretarial course.
It was during her time at Draughans Business College that she met Dale F. Greer who was studying for a combined business degree. The couple was married on March 27, 1937 at the First United Lutheran Church in Memphis, Tennessee. The couple lived in Tempe, Arizona while Dale worked with the Soil Conservation Service. After Dale inducted in the United States Army Ophelia went to live with her sister, Sarah Justice in Pratt, Kansas.
Ophelia lived in various locations in California and worked at the military PXs in order to be near her husband until he was sent to the South Pacific in March of 1944. She moved to San Jose, California where she obtained employment at the First National Bank, later taking the Civil Service Test and working for the U.S. Employment Service.
The couple moved to Limon, Colorado in 1947 where they purchased a home on the highway running through Limon and converted it into The Limon Tourist Home. This is where Ophelias gifts and talents really shown as she loved entertaining the many guests that stayed in their Tourist Home.
In 1974 Dale and Ophelia moved to Greeley, Colorado where Ophelia spent her remaining years. Ophelia traveled extensively on vacation to various places over most of the United States including Hawaii, plus a seven-country tour of Europe.
Ophelia was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Dale, seven sisters and three brothers.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
