Obituary of Betty Monroe
Betty Lou (Cox) Monroe, age 85, long-time Stratton area resident passed away Friday, March 28, 2014 at the Golden Wheat Assisted Living in Stratton.
Betty was born February 11, 1929, the sixth of seven children born to James and Nellie (Russell) Cox. After graduation from Seibert High School with the class of 1947 Betty attended beauty school in Denver, she returned to Burlington where she worked in a beauty shop until her marriage to Orval Monore in Raton, New Mexico in 1949.
Betty and Orval lived north of Vona and farmed for many years. They spent a few years in Colorado Springs where Betty sold Avon, a job she enjoyed as she made new friends. In 1969 they returned to the Stratton area where Betty worked as a cook for the Golden Prairie Inn and later at the Stratton School District retiring in 1994.
Betty is a life member of the Vona Baptist Church. She is also a member of the Stratton Senior Citizens where she enjoyed playing the game of Rummikub with her many friends. She loved to play BINGO and traveled weekly, when her health allowed, as she enjoyed the fellowship and the game.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Orval and her great-granddaughter, Emily Superchi, Also preceding her in death were her 4 brothers, Edwin, Ira Duke, Gerald and Billy, half-brother Roy Cox, and baby sister Edra Mae and half-sisters Inez Buschwalter and Mildred Buschwalter.
The brightness in her life came from her family. She is survived by her three children; Judy Armour of Stratton, Joanne (Jerry) Jones of Fort Morgan and Jim (Cinda) Monroe of Brush. She is also survived by grandchildren; Jeromy (Stephanie) Armour of Stratton, Heather (Adam) Superchi of Centennial, Doug (Cassie) Jones of Thornton, April (Ali Carr-Hill) Monroe of Lubbock, TX, Russell (Katie) Monroe of Homer City, PA and Melissa (Isaac) Hopkins of Stratton. While she enjoyed her children and her grandchildren, no one could brighten her day like her great-grandchildren; they were true blessings in her life. Betty is survived by her greats; Zachery, Dalton and Caden Armour of Stratton, Jacob and Jonathan Hopkins of Evans, Tatum, Finn ,and Reagan Jones of Thornton and Alixandria Monroe of Homer City, PA. She is also survived by her sister Dorothy Schwartz of Widefield, and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
