Obituary of Jean Reid
Jean Stewart Reid was born as Lois Jean on February 5, 1924 in Frame, just outside of Charleston, West Virginia. She was the 9th of 10 children born to Charles Stewart and Virginia Jackson Stewart. Upon graduating from high school and business school Jean moved to Denver in 1942 to care for her sister Mildred, who was recovering from a serious illness. While in Jean was living Denver a man named George S. Reid was working on the Brett Gray Ranch. Through the match making efforts of Mrs. Brett Gray, George and Jean where introduced and went on a horse ride together. Jean married the love of her life on July 19, 1945. George and Jean worked on the Brett Gray ranch, in the L of Lincoln County for several years. Jean cooked for the crew and quickly became known for her biscuits. Many days she made 72 biscuits for breakfast as well as cooking dinner and supper. George and Jean were blessed with the arrival of twins, John Glenn II and Mary Lynn in May of 1950. Upon leaving the Brett Gray ranch George and Jean briefly lived and ranched near Penrose CO. In 1958 George and Jean purchased a ranch that later became Reid Cattle Company. They remained on the ranch the rest of their years, located between Ordway and Punkin Center. Making the ranch profitable was their first priority and they successfully owned, operated and grew Reid Cattle Company with the help of John and Mary. Much to Jeans delight the ranch is now under the operation of the third generation. During her years on the ranch Jean was active in the Lincoln County Cowbelles as well as serving as an election judge of the Cowan precinct. Later Jean was instrumental in the formation of the Gift of Life Foundation, which is dedicated to maintaining and improving health care in Lincoln County. Jean also served as a director on the Lincoln County Hospital Board. In March of 2003 Jean lost her beloved husband of almost 58 years. After that she continued to live in her own home and enjoyed her great-grandchildren on a daily basis. Jean passed away on August 30, 2014 in her home with her family surrounding her.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband George S Reid, 5 brothers and 4 sisters as well as several nieces and nephews.
Jean is survived by her children John and his wife Janell of the ranch and Mary and husband Charles Bloom of Windsor CO. She is also survived by her granddaughter Sara Jean and husband David Herman of Folsom CA, grandsons George S Reid II (Chip) and wife Nikki of the ranch and Chris Bloom and wife Kay of Longmont CO. Also surviving are great grandchildren Maggie Jo Reid, Shane Reid and Sophia Bloom, sister-in-law Donna Stewart of Charleston WV, as well as many nieces and nephews.
