Obituary of Dale Thompson
As we all travel through life, we all wear many hats. Dale was no exception. He proudly wore each hat with pride and dignity. Most important was his husband hat. His love and support of Mary was evident as he not only respected but encouraged her career. He became Mister Mom on many occasions as she was needed by others within the community. He deeply loved Mary, his partner of 50 years. The last two words Dale was able to say was My Wife as she walked into his hospital room.
Dale was an amazing dad. He was strong and supportive, teaching by example. He was his kids biggest fan, whether he was listening to a music concert, watching a sporting event, or watching them show at the county fair. Dale was always present. He was not only firm but kind. He respected his childrens decisions and offered advice in a manner that was compassionate. They were allowed to make their own mistakes and encouraged to learn from them. He created a safe and wonderful place to spend a childhood.
When he was given his Grandpa hat 23 years ago, it was one he enjoyed immensely. Nine precious little people made him so very happy. It was extremely fun to watch him laugh and giggle at the silly, little things his grandkids did. He was patient and kind to his grandchildren. They adored their Grandpa Dale.
Shortly after high school graduation, Dale accepted another hat that he wore proudly. He was inducted into the U.S. Army and served two years both stateside and at bases in Germany. He earned the rank of corporal.
The membership hat he wore for the Lutheran Church was extremely important. Dales belief in God was a significant part of his life. He was dedicated to Sunday worship and the church community. He truly loved Sunday coffee and his weekly visit with congregation members.
That dirty old cowboy hat represented his love for his occupation of 60 years. He was a farmer and rancher through and through. He loved farming and ranching with his son. Not only could he fix just about anything, he could also build whatever was needed to complete a job. He respected the land and animals. He was kind and gentle. Dale worked extremely hard and his work ethic was impeccable. Driving a tractor or harvesting a crop was one of his greatest pleasures in life.
Woodworking allowed Dale to create many beautiful pieces of furniture including his famous cedar chests. He was thrilled that so many of his creations found homes across the United States. When he dusted off his carpenters hat, it was incredible what he would build.
Dale cared for his community serving twelve years on the Genoa School Board. He also enjoyed his neighbors and friends. When the visiting hat came out, look out. He treasured a good visit and cherished the time he spent his friend and neighbors. He also valued the time others would give to him, especially his classmates from Hugo High School, they were dear friends of Dales.
Dales life was full. The many hats he wore made our lives rich and complete. He was a family man who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren deeply. He will be greatly missed.
