I want you to know that although I cannot be with you tomorrow I will be thinking of you and with you in spirit, as you say your final goodbyes to an amazing man.
I don’t profess to have known Sean very well living so far away but here are some of my memories
They are as I remember but I cannot testify to the accuracy as I have been known to muddle my memories.
The first time I met Sean was at 17 Gransley Rise in 1987 ish. Mike took me and the girls to see you at Mick's mums home I was unaware of his problems to me he was just a shy little boy.
The next time I met Sean was when we joined you on a road trip. Sean was suffering from an ear infection. I don’t believe we knew this when we set out but Nancy knew something was wrong. She knew him so well that even when it was not obvious to anyone else she knew and tuned into Sean to know exactly what needed to be done.
Somewhere in our attic we have the pictures we took on this trip and there is one particular picture that Mike and I always refer to when reminiscing about our trips and that is a picture of us all at the edge of some water with pine trees in the back ground and Sean with the look of complete contentment (it's a beautiful picture)
I believe this was also the time (but my memory sometimes plays tricks) Nancy needed to run an errand and Mick wasn’t home so I decided that maybe I could be of use as a sitter whilst Nancy ran the errand. What could go wrong? Sean was having a nap. Nancy could not have been gone more than 30 minutes but oh what she came back to was unbelieveable. You both had previously warned us that sometimes Sean would get up and strip off and also that he loved running water. Well I found out 1st hand because when Nancy returned she found me in her bathroom trying to turn off the taps that Sean was insisting needed to be on and trying to keep Sean clothed, really funny sight from the outside but I got myself into a mess. Nancy came in and in her calm manner took charge and sorted it out in seconds.
Sean loved to swing on his swing in the back yard in Denver and look up at the sun he was so content and I was able to push him on the swing in safety and just watch him smiling. The other thing I witnessed whilst on one of our trips was that he loved to hold a piece of sparkly tinsel in front of his eyes and just sit smiling. He also got great pleasure from the water hose in the back yard. He just loved water whether it be in the bathroom, back yard or in the swimming pool.
Sean had a most amazing way of letting you know when he wasn’t happy and Mike found out when we were eating a takeout barbeque (which was amazing) and Sean was sat next to Mike and all of a sudden he started to hit Mike on the arm. Mike just shrugged it off not knowing what was Sean was trying to tell him, when Nancy informed him that Sean was after his barbeque as well as his own. Sean didn’t get any of Mike’s barbeque but Mike got a real sore arm.
On our last visit to Byers we went to the swimming pool to watch Sean. He was so happy in the water, jumping off the diving board with Doc’s amazing help, it was a beautiful sight.
I will always think of Sean as a water boy who loved the sun on his face.
Goodbye Sean it was a pleasure to have been a very small part of your adventurous life.
