Obituary of Thomas Eugene Stoumbaugh
Longtime Deer Trail, Colorado resident Thomas Eugene Stoumbaugh passed away on December 17, 2020.
Tom was born on November 26, 1946 in Burlington, Colorado to Berton Lee and Marcella L. Witzel. He was the youngest of two children.
Tom attended school and graduated from Burlington, Colorado in 1964. Shortly after graduation, Tom enlisted in the United States Army and served 3 years. He served a single tour in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1967.
Tom married Pamela Jean Lofdahl on September 7, 1968 in Hugo, Colorado. The couple initially resided in Lakewood, Colorado and shortly thereafter moved to Deer Trail. To this union, three children were born; Thomas Harry, Rachel Kristine and Cody Lee.
Tom was an iron worker, serving under Iron Workers Local 24, from 1975 to 1990. He worked on many of the high-rise buildings in downtown Denver which remain as part of the Denver skyline. His children fondly remember having pig roasts with Tom’s iron worker buddies on their farm east of Deer Trail. Their farm and ranch yielded wheat and wool as well as giving their children plenty of wide-open spaces to make memories to last a lifetime. Tom served as a member of the Deer Trail Jockey Club and as an umpire for local youth baseball. After iron working and farming/ranching, Tom and his family moved to town and started a tree trimming business, Stoumbaugh & Sons which was later rekindled as Visions Services. His kind heart and accepting nature guided him to give many an opportunity in the workforce without judgment. Tom also worked for Evergreen Caissons, which took him traveling to Montana and all throughout Colorado. Tom eventually eased into retirement, though he still worked part-time as a beloved gatekeeper for High Plains Raceway.
Tom never knew a stranger. His love and generosity were shown to many during his lifetime and impressed upon those around him. One of his greatest treasures was being Papa to seven adoring grandchildren who knew his soft side and how to twist his heart to their liking. He shared his love for hunting, fishing and gardening with anyone willing to partake. He was a loyal, faithful servant upon this Earth, and it gives his family no greater comfort to know that his faith reunited him with his wife and loved ones in Heaven.
He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his brother Berton Lee Stoumbaugh Jr., his brother-in-law’s Patrick Edgar Lofdahl and Jerry Dzik, sister-in-law’s Jennie Jo Lindsay and Phyllis Kathryn Hanners and a dear friend James “Butch” Ford.
He is survived by brother-in-law’s Neil (Ann) Lofdahl of Buckeye, Arizona, Joe Lindsay of Big Sandy, Montana and Merlin Hanners of Camp Verde, Arizona, sister-in-law’s Kandy Stoumbaugh of Page, Arizona, Mary Ann (Al) Dorsey of Chandler, Arizona and Martha Dzik of St. Paul, Minnesota, sons Thomas (Monica) of Golden, Colorado and Cody (Jessica) of Deer Trail, daughter Rachel (Kenneth) Morelock of Deer Trail and grandchildren Cole, Madison, Mitchell and Brett Stoumbaugh, and Raine, Skyler and Walker Morelock. He is also survived by dear friends Red King and Duane Hitchcock both of Burlington, Colorado, Tom Cox of Deer Trail as well as many other family members and a host of friends.
Service arrangements will be announced at a later time. Tom proudly served as a member of VFW Post 6491 in Burlington, Colorado following his return from Vietnam. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in his name to VFW Post 6491, 884 Rose Avenue, Burlington, Colorado 80807.
