Obituary of Floyd Ewing

Floyd George Ewing, age 95, died of cancer on August 21, 2016, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Floyd is survived by his wife, Norma Ewing, of Liberty Heights, Colorado Springs, Colorado; his brother Glen Ewing of Genoa, Colorado; his children Neal Ewing of Genoa, Colorado, Barbara LaLone, of Monument, Colorado, Diana Walz of Columbia, Missouri and their spouses Laura Monks, Ron LaLone, Lee Walz, and grandchildren Jake Ewing, Shannon Younkin, Sean Bostwick, Randall Walz, Ryan Walz and six great grandchildren, all who loved him dearly. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. Floyd was born on July 31, 1921 in Yuma, Colorado, to parents Mable Henerietta Swearingen and Everett Edmund Ewing. The family moved to Genoa, Colorado in 1930. He graduated from Genoa High School in 1942, enlisted in the Navy September 3 of the same year and served in the Navy until the end of WWII. From his time in Corpus Christi and training in Stillwater, Oklahoma, to Port Chicago and the South Pacific, his war stories became special to his children and grandchildren through his wonderful storytelling ability. Upon discharge from the Navy, he returned to Genoa, Colorado to take up his passion for farming. He had a love of the land and everything that was related to making a living from the land. He was actively involved in farming throughout his life. He married his high school sweetheart, Norma Jane Holst, on September 21, 1945. The couple resided in Genoa, Colorado until recent health issues required their move to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Together they enjoyed traveling, attending their grandchildren’s special events and being actively involved in the Genoa Community. Floyd seldom went anywhere without striking up a conversation with someone he had just met. He enjoyed sports, throwing horseshoes, playing cards and created ping pong tournaments that became something family and friends anticipated. Over the years he became quite a baker and filled empty ice cream tubs with his delicious chocolate chip cookies giving them as gifts to everyone’s delight. Floyd was known for his infectious laugh, warm smile, his kindness and generosity. His family and friends will remember him as a thoughtful, compassionate and joyful person. He was a loving husband, a wonderful parent and a magical grandparent.
