Tim - August 17, 2015
Posted: August 17, 2015 | Last Revised: August 17, 2015
When Tim first started with Gas Construction at Colorado Springs Utilities, he was assigned to my crew. That very first day it didn't take me long to realize that Tim was going to be a keeper, everything I threw at him he just jumped in on with both feet and got it done and through the past 17 years that I worked with him that has never changed. It didn't mattered how tough a job was that I gave him, he would never question, wine or complain about it, he just put everything he had into it and did whatever it took to complete the task. He was a doer and a very hard worker as most farm or country kids are. Tim and I soon became friends due to his amazing work ethic, having similar country backgrounds and both of us growing up in rural areas out east of Colorado Springs. Word quickly spread amongst the crews of Tim's work ethic, his ability to pick things up so fast and now proficient he became at them. Tim became a sought after crew member by many of the gas supervisors, who negotiated and argued over who was going to get him.
We both moved up the ranks in our careers in Gas Construction and remained friends over the years. At one point a few years later, Tim had to have surgery on his shoulder and management asked me if I could use him over in the Gas Quality Control group while he recuperated. Well I jumped at this opportunity to have Tim be a part of my team again, even though it was for only a few months. One day Tim and I were out looking at a new subdivision project to release it and have it scheduled for construction. The developer of this project was somewhat of a problem child and he promptly started screaming, cussing and hollering at me when I had to explain to him that he still needed to do a few things before I could release his project for construction. He got right up in my face continuing with his tantrum. Before I could react to the situation I heard this big deep voice right behind me say in a rather gruff but very serious tone "Is there a problem here, sir"? The look on that guys face when he looked up and saw Tim standing directly behind me and realizing what a mountain of a man he was now standing in the shadow of was priceless, his whole demeanor and attitude changed immediately and he was very pleasant and professional for the remainder of the conversation and Tim ever had to utter another word. Being around and with Tim you always knew that he had your back no matter what and felt the presence of a protector. During this same time Tim was helping us out in Gas Quality Control, I was planning to build a house and knowing that Tim had started his own business putting up pole barns and upon finding out what a wealth of knowledge he was about carpentry, framing, concrete and everything else that had anything to do with building houses, barns and what have you, I bombarded him daily with hundreds if not thousands of questions, which he patiently answered. Tim was extremely sharp about everything I needed to know about building a house and was gracious enough to share his knowledge, experience and offer his assistance to me. When I let him know that I was going to dig the foundation myself, he asked when I planned to do this and when I told him he said I will be down with my transit to shoot grade and help you. Tim spent two days down there helping me which were both 100+ degree days, but Tim never complained, he just stayed right there for hours on end helping me, even though it was hot and miserable and he would never take a dime or allow me to compensate him in any way for his time and fuel. Tim also helped me design my horse barn and then built it for us and it came out just like he said it would and exactly how I had envisioned it would, as Tim was a perfectionist and wouldn't settle for anything less. I don't know how I would have ever gotten through the whole building process had it not been for Tim, he was my saving grace.
I teased Tim about how he came across to people sometimes like a big ole mad grizzly bear, especially by those who didn't know him and just saw it as him being big, gruff and ornery, but that he couldn't fool me as I knew deep down he was really just a big teddy bear, to which he would just give me that you got me, but don't tell anybody grin. Tim was a big man and whose heart was just as big and who cared deeply for those closest to him. Tim was always willing to go out of his way to help a friend out whenever they needed him and without them even having to ask. He cared deeply for family and friends and his eyes just lit up whenever he had the opportunity to mention or talk about his family, as you could definitely tell his world revolved around them and they were all vitally important to him. I am proud to call Tim my friend and pray that the family will find comfort and peace in knowing how much he meant to us and that he will be dearly missed by many.

Tim - A Country Gentleman - August 17, 2015
Posted: August 17, 2015 | Last Revised: August 17, 2015
For many days now, I've struggled to select a story to share -
I can't pick just one -
So, I shall share the top ones where Tim made such a difference for me and my own.
Years ago, my mom and dad looked at selling a portion of their property. I was far away, and heard the story of Tim's meeting with them, as a buyer, second hand -
My Dad took pride in a job well-done - he did what he could for his neighbors and those community members in a vulnerable time (elderly, sick, single mom's trying to make it, etc.)
His favorite line to indicate approval was, "(He/She) is a Keeper"
Dad possessed a man-who-holds-the line exterior and teddy bear heart - He recognized those qualities in others and said so of Tim at that time, as well as deeming Tim, "a keeper".
When Dad passed away in 2007 after an extended battle with cancer, Tim and Lori were there through it all, even though Lori's Dad was fighting his own battle - ready to help however they could.
After my Dad passed, Tim spoke with me and my brother- we had both managed to be home full-time, the last months, but, still, lived 2 or more hours away from Mom at the time.
I will never forget the look in his eye, when he drew us aside, and said, "Don't worry - I'll keep an eye on her and take care of things - she's family."
Knowing he was nearby eased my heart and I knew Mom was in good hands until we could arrive from far away.
In 2011, I moved back to the home place and had grand dreams of a big garden, a return to country life and a chance to rebuild a life more in fashion with what I wanted, but had not had, for the past 20 years.
A now-single mom, with tight budget and, as one who had lost my oldest son (and was still over-protecting the younger one), Tim never failed to say, "I hear about your budget, but we'll find a way to get 'er done, in the Right Way! No sense in wasting money now and redoing it a few months from now."
OR, "I hear ya, but he's a boy going into manhood and you can't protect him forever. You gotta let him try and learn."
He and Lori stood by me in my darkest hours - were patient as I adjusted back to the lifestyle of my youth, struggled with my grief and questioned my faith in face of so many losses in quick succession - they even listened when I brought up new ideas of garden bed planning/hail protection when I wasn't an engineer or expert - and were willing to be part of the gardening experiments I wanted to try.
But most of all - I counted on Tim to call me on perspectives/beliefs that were not true, that I adopted in face of overwhelming events -
He never shied away from saying what he thought was best for the long run, but never made me feel like less - and stepped in to be the manly presence my young son so needed at that transitional time.
Tim gave of himself, when my family was afloat on the ocean of changes -
He was who I talked with about engineering, sustainability, politics and a thousand other subjects I used to discuss with my Dad and had not been able to talk about with anyone else. :)
I could always trust him to say what he thought, and I always felt safe, which I so sorely needed at that time, whether he agreed with my take on things or not.
I listened and learned as he shared the intricacies of turning off/turning on utilities when the Waldo Canyon fire threatened my loved ones and friends in Colorado Springs and he explained the process and told me 'to quit worrying'. :)
He never coddled, but always was kind in reassurance when you were weak, gave ya a kick in the butt (figuratively) when you needed one and was a wealth of ideas and knowledge.
Though I knew Lori years before I knew Tim, I grew to love him as a brother - I watched for many years as his everyday actions revealed a caring Husband, a loving & proud Dad, and dedicated member of the community -
One who took on any challenge, said what needed to be said without malice and took care of whatever he deemed as 'his own' or his responsibility.
Tim always reminded me of the men of the community of my youth - Get the Job Done, Pitch In, Say How it Is, and protect those who need some extra back-up/help.
Simple words can never express the difference he made for me and my own, during a rough patch in life - nor the admiration I have for how he found ways to quietly go about serving his family, friends, community and customers.
He will be sorely missed by our family, but not more than by his own - You all are never far from our thoughts and prayers as you walk this path. - Tamrah Jo Docterman
