Reva Jackson

Obituary of Reva Jackson

Reva Grace (Braly) Jackson was born March 14, 1913 in Washington, Kansas to Spurgeon Hugh and Ida May (Sharp) Braly. On July 27, 2006 at the age of 93, our Lord called Reva to her heavenly home. Reva attended Bond School north of Washington, Kansas. On her ninth birthday Reva and her mother arrived in Colorado by train to join her father on their reclaimed homestead northeast of Vona. She attended the remainder of her elementary grades at West Point School where her parents organized the Upper Room Sunday School, which was the focal point of the community. In 1930 Reva graduated from Stratton High School. On June 2, 1930, Reva and John Dewey Jackson were married at the Vona Baptist Church Parsonage by Reverend Starr. To this union five children were born, Virgene Esther, Paul Irvin, Betty May, Mary Olive and Anna Belle. The 1935 Memorial Day devastating flood of the Republican River swept away their livestock, machinery and all the buildings except the house. It was a miracle the family survived. Though their possessions were swept away the continued to farm and ranch northeast of Vona, until moving to Burlington in 1977. Reva was a faithful member of the Vona Church before transferring to the First Baptist Church in Burlington, where she enjoyed her ladies aid group and adult Sunday school classes. She was involved in the community quilting circle, card club, held offices in the Home Demonstration Club, Colorado Cowbells, Colorado Farm bureau attending functions in Chicago and Washington, D.C., a Rainbow 4-H Club leader and sponsor of 4-H Club members attending Camp Tobin at the Colorado State Fair. As a couple they were awarded the National Skelly Award in 1955. When Paul’s wife Dolores passed away in 1961 Reva and Dewey helped Paul raise his three small children. Words cannot express the faith and strengths she shared and conveyed to her family and friends. Reva enjoyed the family Thanksgiving dinners that were a tradition for many years. She was preceded in death by her father and mother Ida and Spurgeon Braly, her husband Dewey of sixty-three years and their son Paul Jackson.
