Obituary of Minnie Peery

Longtime Kit Carson county resident, Minnie Elizabeth Peery passed away on August 1, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Center in Goodland, Kansas. She was 89 years old. Minnie was born to Clarence Watson and Ella Mae Fox Watson on August 16, 1916 in Jetmore, Kansas. They lived in Jetmore, Kansas until the fall of 1926 when they moved to Johnson, or Big Bow, Kansas near the Colorado-Kansas line. They lived there until October 5, 1935, when she and Joseph Peery of Johnson, Kansas were married in Ulysses, Kansas by Pastor Roxie Powell. Minnie’s brother Joe Watson and Joe’s sister Ernestine Peery were their attendants. They lived in Johnson, Kansas for several years in a rented house. Lloyd Herman was born to them in the Garden City Hospital on September 6, 1936. They moved to a home north of Johnson, owned by Charlie Winger of Johnson. He had been elected sheriff and his family was moving to town while he filled his terms. Joe was employed by Charlie and farmed with his brothers Vincent and Howard. When Charlie’s term was up, Joe and Minnie moved closer to the Colorado line where they and Howard rented 1000 acres of wheat ground. Warren Arthur was born at the Syracuse Hospital on May 21, 1942 and Ralph Wayne was born on October 7, 1944. When Ralph was about a year old, they moved to a house on 1000 acres of land a mile from the Colorado line and a mile from the Stanton and the Hamilton county line. The got their mail on the Syracuse route. Joe later bought a ½ section of ground in Flagler, Colorado and moved their in the fall of 1945. They lived in a grainery the first winter and later built a ½ basement house that winter and drilled a well. Joe passed away on May 18, 1965 of a massive heart attack. On August 1, 1968 Minnie went to work in Burlington, Colorado at the Social Services office and worked there for 16 years. She later moved back to Flagler in 1985, where she and Walt Crisp enjoyed their retirement together until he passed away in April 2000. Minnie then moved back to Burlington to live, where she could be closer to family. She then resided in the nursing home in Goodland, until her death. She is preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers Homer Watson and Joe Watson. She is survived by her three sons Lloyd (Marilyn) Peery of Middlesex, New Jersey; Warren (Judy) Peery of Burlington, Colorado and Ralph Peery of Flagler, Colorado; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Peery were held on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at 10:30 AM at the Flagler Baptist Church with Pastor Alvin Wilkerson officiating. Burial was held in the Flagler Cemetery. There was no visitation. Memorials may be made in Minnie’s name to the Flagler Ambulance Service and may be left at the High Plains Bank in Flagler.
