Obituary of Homer Monks

View Video Tribute Longtime Limonite passed away September 8, 2006. Homer M. Monks 90, passed away after a brief illness in Mesa, Arizona. Homer was the son of Roy M. and Edith V. (Mullett) Monks. Homer was born in Cooper County, Missouri, on October 10, 1915. When Homer was 14 the family moved to Hugo, CO. The family at that time consisted of 7 boys and 3 girls. Three more children were born in Colorado a sister and two more brothers making a family of thirteen children. Homer was second to the oldest. Homer married Dorothy Maxine Steele on September 21, 1936, in Limon, CO, and to this union six children were born; Bob, Ed, Jerry, Jim, Jack and Patty. Homer worked at various jobs before he joined the navy. He returned to Limon, CO, and later started his construction company. He had a very successful business. All of the children were associated with the family business at various times in their lives. Upon retirement, Homer spent much deserved time between his home in Limon, CO, and Mesa, AZ, golfing, fishing, traveling and playing cards at View Point. Homer was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, one son, Jack, one great granddaughter, McKenzie Monks, and three brothers, David, Harold and Arthur Monks. He is survived by his children; Bob (Velma) of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Colorado Springs, CO, Ed (Rose Marie) of Florence, AZ, Jerry (Carol) of Limon, CO, Jim of Mesa, AZ, and Patty Monk of Mesa, AZ, five brothers; Hillard (Emma) of Limon, CO, Bill (Gladys) of Limon, CO, George (Pat) of Limon, CO, Gene (Delores) of Bellingham, WA, and Frank (Bertha) of Bellingham, WA, four sisters; Dorothy Gilles, Thelma Reity, Huldah (Don) Igou, and Betty Jo (Jack) all of Tucson, AZ. Homer is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by a very special friend, Elmira Benett, who was his companion and caregiver throughout the end of his life. His family and a host of friends will miss him deeply. Funeral services for Homer were held Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Limon, CO, with interment to follow at the Pershing Memorial Cemetery.
