Obituary of Thelma McKnight

Thelma Clark McKnight, 95, of Matheson died April 23, 2007 in Colorado Springs. She was born on April 18, 1912, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to William Elmer and Sarah Smith Clark. The family moved to Matheson, Colorado in 1913, seeking a better climate after her father was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Her father died in 1924 and she and her three siblings were raised by her mother. She graduated from Simla Union High School in 1931. She worked on the Wells Sheep Ranch as cook; after her mother died in 1939 she worked in Colorado Springs and in 1944 she moved to California where she worked for a year. On May 29, 1945 she married Harry McKnight. Thelma was known in the family as a wonderful cook. She liked to use precious ingredients, many of which were grown in her garden. Her children’s memories include canning season, fried chicken season and deserts at every meal. She is survived by her four children: Lynda (Jim) Carner of Falcon, Dennis (Doris) McKnight of Simla, Clifford (Virginia) McKnight of rural Matheson, Mary McKnight of Colorado Springs; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and her sister Mona Huscher of Goodland, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry, in 1988, her brother Clifford, in 1976, and her brother Elwood, in 1964. A graveside service will be held at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Colorado Springs on April 26, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Jerry Allen officiating.
