Obituary of Madison Stubbs

Madison (Mattie) Stubbs departed from this life May 22, 2007, at the age of 85 years. He was the first of five children born of George I. and Bessie (Klooz) Stubbs on May 29, 1921. He attended the Burlington school system from the age of 7 years until graduating with the class of 1940. He was active in all school sports. During his high school summers he worked for local farmers, Safeway and the city light plant. Mattie Joined the Colorado National Guard, Company I at the age of 16. In 1942 he was drafted into the US Army and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He was honorably discharged from service in December of 1945. He worked for the city of Burlington as a policeman and an electrical linesman, and for Kit Carson County in road maintenance until his retirement. Mattie and Dorothy Seelhoff were married in Goodland, KS, Jan. 25, 1942. To this union three children were born: Marion Madison and twins Elise Ann and Ellis Van. He was an active baptized, confirmed member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Burlington and was a member of the VFW Post 6491. Mattie was an avid Bronco and Rockies fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, scouting, vacations, playing cards, dominoes and checkers with his family and friends. After retirement he was active in RSVP, McArthur Senior Center activities and the Share Program. Preceding him in death are his father George, mother Bessie and one sister, Marie. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; 2 sons, Marion and wife Tink of Golden, CO; and Ellis and wife Jane of Louisville, CO; a daughter, Elise and husband Duane Gile of Scandia, KS; a brother, Glenn Stubbs of Clifton, CO, 2 sisters Delores Bishop of LaJunta, CO and Bonita Oldham of Brighton, CO; 10 grandchildren, Tracey Ritchie, Kelly Perna, Chad Gray, Kade Gile, Jared “Peteâ€? Gile, Luke Gile, Shan Brunel, Kim Szecsi, David Stubbs and Wayne Topliss; and 14 great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services for Mattie were held on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 10:30 am at the 1st St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Hanson officiating. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery with military honors provided by Burlington VFW Post 6491. Visitation was held from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at the 1st St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made in Mattie’s name to 1st St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the VFW Post 6491 and may be left at the Bank of Burlington in Burlington, Colorado.
