I was born August 30th, 1934 on the farm, to George and Thelma Andrews. During the Dust Bowl days, the dust was so bad my parents had to cover the windows and my crib with sheets to keep the dust out.
Our family consisted of older brother Elton, who died in infancy, older sister Gwendolyn, younger brother Gary, younger sister Karen, and myself. We lived in the farmhouse with no indoor plumbing; the outhouse was a long way from the house especially after dark, and we had no electricity or running water. The house was heated with a coal stove and the cooking range. We would heat bricks at night to keep our feet warm and we studied by lamplight in the evenings.
Gwen and I milked 5 head of milk cows before going to school in the morning and also at night. We also picked up corncobs in the afternoon to keep the fires going. After milking the cows we would bring the milk to the house and would use a separator to separate the cream from the milk. The cream was then sold to a Creamery in Burlington and the money used to buy food.
We raised a big garden and canned a lot of vegetables and meat. We raised a big melon patch and one memory was eating cantaloupe in the evening under the stars with the family.
Growing up on the farm, we rode our horses to move cattle to and from pastures. We rode on the weekends with our cousins and friends for pleasure. We also helped Mom with cleaning, cooking and ironing. Our home was remodeled and we had all the amenities that we have today.
My High School days were fun, we rode the bus to school each day for our education. I was a cheerleader for two years and was honored my Senior year to be elected Homecoming Queen.
I was married while still in High School to Darrell Farnsworth and to this union my first two children were born, Debra and Mark. The marriage was dissolved in 1961 and the children and I moved to Burlington.
When in Burlington I started the Credit Bureau of Eastern Colorado and worked with this business until 1963 when I met and married Harry Thompson. Our family then moved to Limon, Co and we were blessed with the arrival of Kurt. As our family grew so too did our businesses. Aside from our farm and ranch, I had the opportunity to create an upholstery, and later a decorating business. Most recently I worked with Kurt to build a cow / calf operation.
We have been blessed with 7 grandchildren, Jill, John, Jason, Jared, Schafer, Cassidy, and Shirley Jo. We have been delighted with the marriages our children and grandchildren have made and have added to our family, John, Sheryl, Becky, Michael, Jessica, and Lindsey. The circle of life continued with the 4th generation upon the birth of our great-grand daughter Emily.
Life has been good to all of us.
