Emma Mullis

Obituary of Emma Mullis

Emma was born to Samuel and Gertrude McCormick on June 10, 1913, in Beloit, Kansas. When she was just a few months old the family moved to Denver. A year later they moved south of Burlington on a homestead. Emma grew up on the homestead with her little brother James David, who was five years younger than her. She helped her parents on the farm by taking care of the livestock and helping her mother around the house. She attended a country school and graduated from Burlington High in 1932. Emma met Clyde Mullis when he came to work for her father in 1928 and they started to date. Clyde and Emma dated for four years before they married on April 24, 1933. They were married at the Sage Funeral Home in Goodland, Kansas. To this union four children were born: Arthur Eugene (Gene), Gertrude Eileen (Eileen), Russell Dean, and Cordelia Francis (Corky). When her children were young, Emma stayed home to care for them. Emma went to work at the hospital as a housekeeper when Cordelia was in the second grade. Emma worked there for 11 years. She then went to Grace Manor and worked for Kay Daniels as a cook and housekeeper. She was employed there for 17 years. Emma then became the head cook for Project Smile for the next 17 ½ years. When asked what she did for a living her response was, “I cook for old people.â€? This would usually cause laughter since Emma tended to be older than most of the people she cooked for. Emma retired from the Senior Center at the young age of 87. Emma belonged to a few different clubs and organizations such as Homemakers Club. She was also involved in the Comet Rebekah Lodge 123 in Burlington were she was a member for over 50 years. Clyde and Emma were married for 44 years when Clyde passed away of complications due to asthma. Emma continued to live in their home on 7th street until 2002. Emma then resided at Autumn Park until June 2006 when her health failed to where she could no longer care for herself. At that time she went to Grace Manor Care Center. While there she enjoyed the many activities and outings that were offered. Emma was Resident Council President for a term. Many of the employees called Emma Granny and she treated everyone as if they were her grandchildren. She never complained or was impatient, often saying, “They will get to me as soon as they can.â€? Emma departed this life on April 8, 2008 at Grace Manor Care Center surrounded by family. She was just two months and two days shy of her 95th birthday. She often said that she lived a good long life. Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Gertrude McCormick, Brother James McCormick, granddaughters Georgie Ann Mullis and Cathy Severin. Grandsons Robert Mullis, David Mullis, and Terry Brachtenbach and son-in-law Bernard Clark. She leaves to mourn her passing her children Gene and wife Jeanette of Burlington, Eileen and husband Jim of Iowa, Russell of Loveland, and Corky of Burlington. Niece Adalee of California, along with a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, other family and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Mullis were held on Monday, April 14, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the Bethel Assembly of God with Pastor Ray Wagoner officiating. Emma final resting place was next to Clyde in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation was held on Monday, April 14, 2008 one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorial may be made in Emma’s name to the McArthur Senior Center and may be left at the First National Bank, Burlington, Colorado.
