Obituary of Arthur Petty

Arthur Tolbert (A.T.) Petty Jr., 88 of Dodge City, Kansas passed away on May 01, 2008. A. T. was born July 13, 1919 in Lincoln County near Karval, Colorado, son of Arthur T. Petty Sr. and Urbane (Tague) Petty. He was the fifth child and had four older sisters; Eliza, Phoebe, Verona and Clara. He attended grade school in a small school house close to home. A.T. attended high school in Karval and graduated in May of 1938. January 15, 1945 he went into the Navy where they trained him for diesel motors. In October 1945 he was assigned to an LST ship. He spent 60 days checking harbors in Japan to see if the mine sweepers had cleared the mines out so U.S. troops could come in. He received his honorable discharge July 6, 1946, at Norman, Oklahoma. A.T. married Nadine G. Sorensen on November 23, 1946 in Ordway, Colorado. Born to this union was born one son, Floyd, and two daughters, Shirley and Lois. He farmed for several years until the arthritis made it too hard to farm so in 1970 he went to Colorado Springs and took a year of business courses. A.T. then worked for Gibson’s store as a payroll clerk in La Junta, Colorado, North Platte, Nebraska, and Dodge City, Kansas until retiring in February 1995. He spent his spare time making wooden articles for family and friends. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714 both of Dodge City, Kansas. A.T. is survived by his wife Nadine Petty of Dodge City, KS; son Floyd and his wife Eileen of Monument, CO; daughters Shirley Chesterman and Lois and her husband Tom Crandall, both of Dodge City, KS; grandchildren Deann (Petty) and her husband Trever Barnett of Colorado Springs, CO; Adam Chesterman and Natalie Crandall both of Dodge City, KS; great – grandchildren Joshua and Brenna Barnett of Colorado Springs, CO and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Urbane Petty, and sisters Eliza Holmes, Phoebe Hall, Verona King and Clara Hodgson. A funeral service for A.T. will be held on Monday, May 05, 2008, 2:00 P.M. at the Karval Church of the Nazerene in Karval, CO. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Karval Community Cemetery, Karval, CO. Memorials may be made to Donor’s Choice.
