Obituary of Vergil Reeves
View Video Tribute
One of seven sons born to Minnie Walker and W.W. Reeves of rural El Paso County, Vergil Reeves spent his life close to the places and people he loved. Following the death of his parents, Vergil, then 17 and his 14 year old brother, Lester, became the stewards of the land homesteaded by their parents. For Vergil, this stewardship became a life-long commitment; each year he longed for that crop which would make â40 bushel wheatâ? or âthousand pound beans.â? His devotion to farming culminated in his active commitment to the American Ag Movement and his participation in the tractorcade to Washington D.C. in January â79.
In addition to farming, Vergil was a skilled carpenter and mechanic, and as a dedicated man respected by his community, his talents were often in demand by friends and neighbors.
Vergilâs passion for farming was surpassed only by his love of God and family. He was a devoted father of three: Ted Reeves of Simla, CO, Beth Blaydes of Castle Rock, CO, and
Marty Reeves of Brighton, CO. He was a doting grandfather of seven: Aaron, Andrea,
Christopher, Cory, Jordan, Kaleena, and Olivia, and a charmed great-grandfather of six: Morris, Cecilia, Sydney, Teddy, Andrew, and Cory.
Born on April 14, 1922, Vergil departed this life on October 4, 2008. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Betty Curtiss Reeves, and his six brothers: Ernest, Paul, Marshall, Harold, Earl, and Lester. Only one continuing ambition remained unfulfilled. At age 86 he was asked, âWhat would you like most to be able to do?â? He wanted, he said, âTo farm"
