Obituary of Daniel Hubbell
Dan Hubbell was born on February 26, 1934, the seventh of nine children. He was born to Otis and Kathryn (Hooke) Hubbell in Vona, Colorado.
Losing his father at an early age, Dan worked numerous jobs throughout his young life in order to help support his family. He followed harvest crews and helped local farmers. Upon graduation from high school in 1952, Dan relocated with his mother and remaining family to Denver and began employment at Gates Rubber Company.
Dan served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1953 to 1956. Upon returning home, Dan married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Grimes. They settled in Denver where their two children were born: Danielle and Terry. The family moved to Bennett, Colorado in 1968 and settled in the new home that Dan built while continuing to work for Gates Rubber Company.
Being a farmer at heart, Dan moved his family to their small farm north of Vona in 1973. Dan had a hog operation while installing linoleum and tile, carpet cleaning and farming on the side.
Several years later, âOperation Big Switchâ? occurred. Without knowledge of Virginia and her sister Barb, Dan and his brother-in-law Carl traded homesteads. Enough said!
Dan worked for the County Road and Bridge crew until retirement and then became the Vona Town Maintenance and Water Man. He took pride in his work and was never happier than when he could hop on his beloved Dixie Chopper and mow everything in sight. He was also a substitute mail carrier which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Dan passed away unexpectedly at home on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, surrounded by family members.
