Helen S. Christenson, 99, of Limon, Colorado passed away on September 17, 2009 in Denver, CO.
Helen was born on April 18, 1910 in Eads, CO to Charles William Sweitzer and Mable Eleanore Nunns one of five children. She graduated high school in Eads, CO in 1928. After graduation she went to St. Louis Conservatory to acquire her major in music.
Helen married Jess Christenson on June 24, 1934 in Colorado Springs, CO and two daughters were born to this union.
When we reflect on Helenâs life there are many things that stand out, one of those being music. She taught many students piano lessons for at least 65 years, unfortunately she never kept track of the number of students she taught but we would estimate at least 1000 students. Helenâs piano recitals were spectacular with glitter signs, back drops, flowers â the works, she made them so special, and they remain precious memories in her students lives. She was the Limon United Methodist Church organist for more than 60 years and was instrumental in acquiring the pipe organ for the church. Helen then had to learn to play the organ which she did and then gave other organists lessons on it.
Another fond memory of Helen is Christmas. Christmas was a big deal in her neighborhood as it is around the world but it became extra special to those who enjoyed Christmas on âDâ Avenue. Helenâs Christmas tree was always beautiful, it was always a real tree no artificial for her, and her outside decorations were all unequaled. Helen was a charter member of the Limon Coffee Club. She enjoyed playing golf, spending time gardening and attended many Limon School activities.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jess, daughter Linda, one brother Chuck, three sisters; Betty, Ruth and Lois and honorary friends; Chuck and Winnie Stone.
She is survived by her daughter Caren Christenson and son-in-law Sam Seay of Christopher Creek, AZ, sister Joan Fedel of Quray, CO and her grandchildren; Charles and Suzanne Hofmann and their children, Alissa and Erik of Gilbert, AZ and Lin and Kelly Sanford and children Ryan and Lauren of Overland Park, KS and many friends and extended family.
